WaveSplitter Displays World's First 8-Inch Planar Lightguide Circuit
Wafer at OFC 2001
Enables Integration of Multiple Optical Functions All on One Chip
FREMONT, CA -March 16, 2001 - Next week at the OFC show,
WaveSplitter Technologies, Inc., a worldwide supplier of fiber-optic
components for optical amplifier and DWDM systems, will display
what is believed to be the first 8-inch planar lightguide circuit
(PLC) wafer. WaveSplitter has broadened its product portfolio to
include the planar lightguide circuit (PLC) technology platform
to offer higher optical functionality and integration to meet customers'
application needs.
This cutting-edge technology enables multiple, complex optical
functions to be combined on a single wafer and a higher level of
integration, resulting in a cost reduction for system designers.
The 8-inch wafer size is the largest silicon wafer currently being
utilized in the fiber optics industry and offers more than 2.5 times
the surface area of the industry standard 5-inch silicon wafer,
yielding many more devices per wafer and enabling system designers
more real estate on the wafer in which to integrate multiple functions.
"WaveSplitter has made a significant technology breakthrough
with the 8-inch wafer design," said Bill Diamond, CEO and President
of WaveSplitter. "Our planar lightguide circuit technology
platform offers our customers a low cost path to higher optical
functionality and integration. The PLC platform complements WaveSplitter's
strategy to offer customized and integrated technology solutions
to meet our customers' diverse application needs."
Planar Lightguide Circuit Initiative
Planar lightguide circuits are a key technology to enable the optical
component industry to address the opportunity presented by the growth
in bandwidth demand. WaveSplitter's PLC technology platform offers
the benefits of wafer-scale processing, automation, integration
of multiple functions and customization to individual system requirements.
Lower costs can be achieved through high-volume wafer-scale processing
while allowing integration of multiple functions on a single substrate
to increase functionality with a reduced footprint. WaveArray
High Channel Count AWG and custom PLC circuits are the first products
to be introduced by WaveSplitter with units already shipping to
customers.
