NEC FiberOptech and WaveSplitter to Display Wide Range of New NEC Transponder Products at OFC

Lowest Power Consumption 10G Transponders and Highest Data Rate PON Transceivers among New Leading-Edge Products

FREMONT ,CA- March 18, 2002 - NEC FiberOptech, Inc., a subsidiary of NEC USA, Inc., and WaveSplitter Technologies, Inc., a worldwide supplier of integrated optical components and modules for advanced optical networks, announced today the introduction of a wide range of new NEC transponder, transmitter and transceiver products which will be displayed at the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference in Anaheim. These exciting new products include:

  • 10G MSA small-form factor (SFF) OC-192 transponders with lowest power consumption
  • 10G Multi-rate SFF transponders (SONET OC-192, 10 Gb/s Ethernet, and G.709 FEC rates).
  • Industry-compatible 16-channel and 4-channel 2.5G transponders.
  • 2.5G DWDM transmitters supporting up to 480km
  • 1.25G Single fiber point to point bi-directional transceivers.
  • 1.25G transceivers for Passive Optical Networks (PON)
"NEC has differentiated its products while fitting within existing Multi Source Agreement (MSA) standards," said Mr. Yoshitaka Morimoto, President and CEO of NEC FiberOptech. "We have reduced the power consumption of the 10G small-form-factor transponders to be the lowest on the market and offer the highest data-rates available for PON transceivers. These new products also leverage the many years of NEC experience with active devices, delivering reliable products in high volume through the use of automated assembly."

"Since we began working with NEC FiberOptech last year, customers have told us how impressed they are with the NEC product reliability," said Bill Diamond, President and CEO of
WaveSplitter. "These new products will provide another example of the quality design and manufacturing ability of NEC."

These new products strengthen NEC's existing family of transponder, transmitter/receiver and transceiver products. Optical transponders are available at both 2.5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s in several standard MSA packages with power consumption lower than competitive offerings. The optical transmitter and receivers are available for SONET and SDH applications with data rates from 155 Mb/s to 2.5 Gb/s covering short to long reach distances. This wide range of products has a detachable fiber interface and is designed to be used in solder reflow manufacturing processes, greatly reducing the labor content in board level manufacturing. PON transceivers are offered for 155 Mb/s to 622 Mb/s and now at 1.25 Gb/s for the optical network unit (ONU). Single fiber point to point Bi-directional transceivers are offered for 125 Mb/s to 155 Mb/s and 1.25 Gb/s with SFF receptacle products for single fiber optical access systems.
