WaveSplitter Announces Availability of Arrayed Waveguide Gratings for Cost-Efficient, Large Scale Multiplexing and Demultiplexing

Small Footprint Eases System Integration; PLC Platform Provides for Scalability

ANAHEIM, CA - March 19, 2001 - Today at the OFC conference, WaveSplitter Technologies, Inc., a worldwide supplier of fiber-optic components for optical amplifier and DWDM systems, announced availability of its WaveArray™ High Channel Count Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG). The WaveArray AWG expands WaveSplitter's portfolio of fiber optic products using the planar lightguide circuit (PLC) platform. It is designed to meet the needs of DWDM system designers by offering a range of channel count products (16, 32, or 40) with channel spacings of 100 GHz. The WaveArray, which is available in both a Gaussian and flat-top profile, allows multiplexing and demultiplexing of densely packed wavelength channels on a very large scale in a cost efficient manner. It uses an optical chip to deliver the channels in a small footprint enabling low and uniform insertion loss, low polarization dependent loss, and low channel cross-talk.

Small Footprint
Although the demand for high channel count DWDM systems is increasing, these higher channel systems should ideally fit in the existing rack or equipment footprint¾placing constraints on component size. WaveSplitter's AWG component measures just 88 mm x 52 mm x 8.5 mm, offering one of the smallest footprints in the industry. In addition, WaveSplitter's AWG utilizes silica-on-silicon technology which employs manufacturing methods similar to those used in the semiconductor industry. This platform enables the potential for scalability, high-volume production, quick turnaround times, low cost, and mass customization to meet customers' individual system requirements.

"Our AWG product family is the first product of our planar lightguide circuit technology platform offering the benefits of compact size, cost efficiency, and semiconductor processing for manufacturing automation," said Bill Diamond, CEO and President of WaveSplitter. "This first product will allow customers to assess our strong technical capabilities leveraging the PLC platform, with the eventual goal of very close collaboration on customized circuits. One great benefit of the PLC technology is mass customization enabling rapid design times to meet customers' unique needs."

Integrated Capabilities
The WaveArray High Channel Count AWG can be combined with WaveSplitter's WaveProcessor™ Interleaver. This integrated solution takes advantage of both fused fiber and PLC technology platforms to create excellent optical performance with dense channel spacing and a wide wavelength range. This solution also offers the scalability system developers and integrators demand to meet future bandwidth capacity requirements. WaveSplitter will be demonstrating a complete 160 channel demultiplexing solution contained within the standard C-band wavelength range running at 10 Gbits/second transmission speed at booth # 2458 at the OFC conference.

Availability
The WaveArray High Channel Count AWG is available for evaluation with production quantities available starting in the second quarter of this year.
