WaveSplitter to Demonstrate Athermal Arrayed Waveguide Grating
Devices at Optical Fiber Communication Conference
FREMONT ,CA- March 19, 2002 - WaveSplitter Technologies,
Inc., a worldwide supplier of integrated optical components and
modules for advanced optical networks, announced today that it will
demonstrate passively athermalized arrayed waveguide grating (AWG)
multiplexers at the Optical Fiber Communication (OFC) Conference.
In this device, the temperature dependent wavelength shift of the
AWG is passively compensated, greatly simplifying its use in DWDM
networks by avoiding the need for heaters, control electronics and
software for thermal management of the AWG. The athermalization
technique can be applied to a range of AWG channel spacing and channel
count products, as well as other planar lightwave circuit devices
where heaters have been required in the past.
"Applying this athermalization technique to our arrayed waveguide
grating preserves the key benefits of AWGs-a very compact footprint,
uniform and low insertion loss, and polarization dependent loss
while eliminating the need for active temperature control,"
said Bill Diamond, President and CEO of WaveSplitter. "Now,
system designers can take advantage of these benefits and reduce
operational expense since no electrical power is required. In addition,
the athermalization technique can be
applied to the other integrated products WaveSplitter has under
development, such as V-Muxes and dynamic gain flattening filters."
An AWG is used to multiplex or demultiplex wavelengths in a DWDM
system. The devices are typically fabricated by depositing and etching
waveguides on a silica-on-silicon wafer, allowing many devices to
be made on a single wafer. AWGs are commercially available at a
variety of channel spacings, from 50 GHz to 400 GHz, and with a
choice of channel counts, addressing application needs covering
from 8 to 80 channels to reach into access, metro access/core, long
haul and ultra-long haul networks.
