OPTICAL COMPONENT INNOVATOR WAVESPLITTER TECHNOLOGIES RECEIVES
EQUITY INVESTMENT FROM INTEL
WaveSplitters photonics expertise to be used to develop solutions for
the new Internet
Fremont, CA, April 5, 2000 WaveSplitter Technologies,
Inc. today announced that Intel Capital has become an equity investor
in WaveSplitter, a leading innovator and supplier of critical components
used in optical amplifier and DWDM systems for long-haul and metropolitan
area optical networks.
WaveSplitter will use the investment to help expand its product
and technology portfolio, as well as to help fund the companys
current development and manufacturing of dense wavelength division
multiplexers (DWDMs), pump laser combiners, and other optical network
components. Specifically, this investment will allow WaveSplitter
to accelerate their development and introduction of silica-on-silicon
planar waveguide components.
WaveSplitter is committed to offering multiple solutions
to our customers, which means having a broad base of technologies
to choose from, said Dr. Jerry Bautista, CTO and Senior VP
of Technology at WaveSplitter. We see planar waveguide technology
as a key technology to have since it allows complex features to
be easily combined on a single wafer. In addition, the trend towards
increased integration, reduced size, and lower cost favor a planar
platform. We are pleased that Intel Capital has invested in this
critical technology area.
With the e-commerce engine driving the need for ever-greater
network speeds and bandwidth, optical communications will play a
central role in the new Internet infrastructure, said Dr.
Sheau Chen, President and CEO of WaveSplitter. The investment
from Intel Capital will help WaveSplitter supply the industry with
reliable and cost effective optical amplifier and DWDM components
while enabling us to develop new, innovative products.
