WaveSplitter Technologies Demonstrates 160 Channel, 25 GHz Demultiplexer
at NFOEC 2000
Demonstration Integrates Dense Channel Interleaver and Array Waveguide
Gratings
NFOEC, Denver, CO, Monday, August 28, 2000 - WaveSplitter Technologies,
Inc., a worldwide supplier of fiber optic components for optical
amplifier and DWDM systems, today demonstrated the integration of
a very dense channel interleaver with high-channel-count array waveguide
gratings (AWGs) to create a 160 channel, 25 GHz demultiplexer. This
demonstration addresses the need of DWDM system integrators to obtain
higher bandwidth solutions by packing more channels into the available
amplifier bandwidth and allows system designers to implement flexible
and scalable high-channel-density optical networking solutions.
"The demand for bandwidth is growing exponentially, and new
products are needed to keep pace with demand," says Bill Diamond,
President and CEO of WaveSplitter. "WaveSplitter knows that
no one technology can meet this demand, and this demonstration highlights
two technologies that WaveSplitter believes are critical to create
high bandwidth solutions. The WaveProcessorTM interleaver allows
very dense filtering with low insertion loss, a flat passband and
excellent crosstalk. AWGs are excellent for filtering high channel
counts in an efficient manner. The 160 channel, 25 GHz demultiplexer
demonstrates what is possible when these two technologies are combined."
The demonstration is based on the integration of a 1x4 25 GHz WaveProcessor
interleaver and four forty-channel, 100 GHz array waveguide gratings.
Each AWG is connected to one of the four outputs of the interleaver
and the AWGs are offset from each other by 25 GHz. For this demonstration,
to test the integration of the components, the four AWGs were provided
by NEC Corporation (NASDAQ, NIPNY) Tokyo, Japan, one of the world
leading DWDM equipment vendors. This demonstration shows a complete
160 channel demutiplexing solution contained within the standard
amplifier C-band wavelength range and was run live during the NFOEC
trade show.
An attached spectral plot (see below) shows the excellent optical
performance obtained in this demonstration. The WaveProcessor interleaver
front end sets the critical design features and offers a wide effective
passband even with the narrow 25 GHz channel spacing. The spectral
plot also shows the excellent insertion loss uniformity over the
wide wavelength range. Finally, the all-fiber design of the WaveProcessor
offers very low dispersion, a critical feature for high-bit rate
systems. These interleaver advantages leverage the efficient filtering
possible with high channel count AWG and combine the best of both
technologies.
